Current Lipedema Treatments

Diet and exercise do not help burn or lose Lipedema fat, a low carb, paleo or RAD diet can help with inflammation, swelling and helping one to live a longer, healthier life.

Manual lymphatic drainage. A form of massage that uses gentle, rhythmic pumping movements to stimulate the flow of lymph around blocked areas to healthy vessels, where it can drain into the venous system. This helps relieve pain and prevent fibrosis.

 Water assisted or Tumescent liposuctions

The Cure for Lipedema Fat: Liposuction at this time is the only method that we know of to remove the lipedema fat.  Diet and exercise can reduce "normal" fat but the lipedema fat remains even after bariatric surgery.  Surgical treatment of lipedema is available in Germany, the UK and elsewhere, usually using tumescent, or water jet assisted liposuction (WAL) lymph sparing liposuction to remove lipedema fat, under local anesthesia (not general).  Research shows lymph sparing liposuction yields good long term results in reduction of lipedema pain and in stopping the progression of lipedema.  (Cornely et al., 2006; Schmeller et al., 2006; Warren et al., 2007; Rapprich et al., 2011, 2012). The need for conservative therapies such as MLD and compression is greatly reduced in almost all patients, and in some cases, conservative therapies can be eliminated, after lymph sparing liposuction.  Dr. Karen Herbst Section about liposuction

Complete Decongestive Therapy

This includes decongestive massage, wrapping and garments. A trained therapist in your area can be found here:

Compression. The use of stretch bandages or custom-fitted panty hose, panties, and/or spandex shorts to increase tissue pressure in the swollen legs and decrease the re-accumulation of fluid.

Surgery for lipedema is also ineffective. Obese women with lipedema who undergo bariatric surgery lose fat mostly from above the waist. Liposuction might seem a reasonable solution, because it is designed to remove fat from beneath the skin. But experts warn that removing enough fat to improve the appearance of the legs would likely cause death. I had the gastric bypass and while I lost about 240 pounds of fat it was from the waist up not waist down, I still have ALL the lipedema fat

Exercise. Helps reduce fluid buildup, increase mobility, and maintain or improve function.
Meticulous skin and nail care. Helps decrease the risk of wounds and infection

Medications and Supplements

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)
